How to cancel any subscription in the UK: complete 2026 guide

Your legal rights, the exact email template, and the pattern that gets cancellations honoured on the first try — even when the service tries to trap you in chat.

Every UK consumer has a legal right to cancel a recurring subscription. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the Consumer Contracts Regulations mean that no matter how many 'retention specialists' a service throws at you, they must process a written cancellation request.

Step 1 — Find who legally sold you the subscription

This matters. If you subscribed via Apple's App Store, you cancel through Apple — the merchant is Apple, not the app. Same for Google Play. If you signed up directly on the service's website, cancel through them. Bank statements will show 'APPLE.COM/BILL' or 'GOOGLE *SPOTIFY' if it was through a store.

Step 2 — Use the email method, not the chat method

Chat widgets are designed to slow you down. Emails leave a paper trail and force the company to log the request. Every UK service has a support address — usually support@, cancel@ or accounts@ their-domain.com.

Step 3 — The template that works

Subject: Cancellation request — [account email or number] Hello, I am writing to cancel my [SERVICE] subscription. Please treat this email as formal written notice under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. Please confirm cancellation in writing and provide the final billing date. I do not consent to further charges after that date. Thank you, [Your name]

Common services — where to send it

  • Netflix — via netflix.com/cancelplan (email support if trapped)
  • Spotify — spotify.com/account/subscription (cancel via account settings)
  • Amazon Prime — amazon.co.uk → Prime Membership → End Membership
  • Gym memberships — email the branch directly, cite Consumer Rights Act; if under a 12-month contract, check the 'cooling off' or hardship clauses
  • Insurance (car, home, life) — email the broker or insurer; you have 14 days cooling off from renewal by law
  • Broadband / mobile — Ofcom's rules require them to accept written notice; use their complaints address

What to do if they ignore you

Forward the unanswered email to your bank and dispute the next charge. Under the Payment Services Regulations 2017, banks must refund unauthorised direct debits without hassle. That's the leverage no chat widget can override.
